2002 represents yet another remarkable vintage for Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley. A mild spring produced a good flower set, followed by a hot, dry summer throughout the Willamette Valley. By early September, growers were faced with soaring sugar levels and the possibility of premature ripening. Then the weather changed and some intermittent days of rain and cooler weather slowed the ripening process and let the grapes continue towards maturity gradually. The weather dried out and much of the problems associated with rain prior to harvest never became a reality. What did become apparent was the quality of the vintage. Many wines of the vintage display a great deal of richness and still have the acid and pH structure to age well. These powerful, rich wines may make the 2002 vintage one of the great vintages in Oregon’s brief winegrowing history.
