Kat mixed her first drink at age six and sipped from her first glass of wine at age nine (on the sly of course). With the advantage of living close to Monterey, she was bootlegging wine bottles at ten years old, and then continued her entrepreneurial adventures during college, benefiting from the close proximity of Napa Valley. During the 2004 Olympics, Kat ventured to Greece and had a near heart attack after drinking multiple bottles of what must be the strongest tasting wine in the world. Kat now subjects herself to buying wine like any good American citizen and has given up her bootlegging activities to write for NoMerlot.com.

Merrill Gillaspy

Freelance copy editor, portrait painter, and occasional Web writer, Merrill has learned about wine in mainly three ways: by cycling up to tasting-room doors from Sonoma to Santa Barbara; by drinking the stuff every single night—week in, month out, year after year; and by taking part in a wine group, which curiously disbanded soon after the Rhone tasting, when Merrill crammed a wall-sized informational poster down members’ throats. Her boyfriend, Greg, made her move from Oakland to Portland. And, although Merrill misses California and isn’t sure she can cozy up to Oregon’s pinot or to wine-region place names like Umpqua and Chehalem, she’s grateful for their Portland-born Jack Russell mix. Turns out, Stella enjoys chewing wine corks, every night of the week.
